The Power of Choices, Change, and Leadership: A Journey to the High Sheriff Role
Frances Stanley’s journey from being expelled as a schoolgirl to becoming the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire is a testament to the power of choice, resilience, and embracing change. In her own words:
“Life doesn’t always follow a straight line — and the roles we end up in aren’t just about titles or timing, but about the choices we make along the way.”
Frances’s story highlights the importance of turning adversity into an opportunity for growth. She reflects on the pivotal moment following her father’s sudden death:
“The only way to live a meaningful life was to start by making meaningful choices.” This insight, gained through a challenging and transformative period, marked the beginning of her journey, not a career, but a path.
Her path was shaped by moments of self-discovery, one of which came through a role she never expected — as the executive chairman of the National Horseracing Museum:
“I had no experience. No qualifications. I had never chaired a meeting, and frankly, I wasn’t even sure how. Just a deep love of Newmarket, of horses, of history — and a slight inability to say no.” Despite feeling unprepared, Frances embraced the role with persistence, learning that “persistence counts for far more than polish.” Over time, she realized that leadership is not about credentials, but about passion, consistency, and sometimes a lot of listening.
Frances’s current role as High Sheriff is a chance to make a lasting impact on her community. Reflecting on her mission, she said:
“The job — at its best — is to shine a light on what’s already working. To connect people, champion great ideas, and quietly, sometimes persistently, ask what more could be done.”
Her focus on tackling inequalities, particularly in the early years, underscores her commitment to creating a more equitable society. She believes that if we start early enough, “we can show children a different way — if we can give families the support they need in those critical early years, then we can break the cycle.”
Frances’s journey is proof that leadership is not just about titles — it’s about the courage to choose, the wisdom to learn, and the commitment to make a difference. As she so beautifully puts it:
“We often tell women they can have it all — but we rarely admit that not all at once. Something has to give. And for me, that something was time. I chose to be present for my children. And I’ve never regretted that choice.”
As Frances continues her journey as High Sheriff, she reminds us all that it’s the choices we make, no matter how unexpected or difficult, that shape the future.
The event also provided an opportunity for informal networking at The Eagle pub, where attendees continued to share ideas and build valuable connections.
A big thank you to all those who attended and made this event memorable!
